Did you know that there are parents that cannot afford enough diapers for their baby? Can you imagine what it’s like to have to worry about such a basic need? How would you feel if it were you?
Keep on reading to find out how you can help. YOU can make a difference in the life of a little baby.
Becoming a parent should be about getting to know your baby, spending time cuddling and bonding but what if instead you have to be stressing out about basic needs, like having enough diapers for you baby. This is a reality many parents face.
I recently had the honor to meet Corinne Cannon at a Blogger lunch. She is an amazing woman with a desire to help these families. She created DC Diaper bank and is currently the Executive Director. Listening to her speak brought tears to my eyes. Before meeting her I was not aware of how many families struggled with providing their babies diapers and how this affected them.
Corinne has accomplished a lot with DC Diaper bank because people like you and me have helped her along the way and today I want to inspire you to take a few minutes out of your day and help out some of these families. It is very easy!
From DC Diaper Bank:
“In DC, 44% of children under age three live in low-income families. In Maryland the number is 33%, and in Virginia 36% of three-year-olds share this reality.”
There are many families in our area that cannot provide their own kids with enough diapers. This forces the families to leave their kids in a soiled diaper longer than recommended, causing these babies pain and discomfort; which could lead to more serious problems.
Babies with soiled diapers and severe diaper rash are not happy babies and unhappy babies tend to cry more, causing even more stress to these families. In extreme cases the parents feel so helpless and terrible about this situation that they lash out at the kids.
Many parents struggle with being able to sustain a job because most daycares require that you send your baby with diapers and since they don’t have enough diapers, they can’t have their baby in daycare; so they can’t work. If they can’t work, they can’t provide adequately for their family. It is a cycle that has to be broken and by donating diapers a lot of these families are able to move forward.
“The DC Diaper Bank provides an average of 100,000+ diapers to more than 3,600 families a month. To date the DC Diaper Bank has donated over 3,000,000 diapers to families in need, and this number continues to grow.” (Source: DC Diaper Bank).
Did you know…?
- Diapers are NOT funded with federal assistance programs. They are considered a personal hygiene item and programs like WIC do not cover diapers, although they are an essential necessity.
- DC Diaper Bank can buy almost 100 diapers with just $12, thanks to discounts they receive from their suppliers. These 100 diapers keep a baby clean for about 2 weeks. Learn more about the $12 factor here.
